Educational Background
Charles Phillips is a prominent business leader with a rich educational background, numerous achievements, and a noteworthy career path. His journey began with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the U.S. Air Force Academy, completed between January 1977 and January 1981. To further his expertise, Phillips pursued an MBA in Finance from Hampton University from January 1983 to January 1986. Not stopping there, he also earned a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from New York Law School, graduating between January 1990 and January 1993. Additionally, he is a member of the Georgia State Bar.
Professional Journey
Phillips began his professional journey as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps with the 10th Marines, serving from June 1981 to June 1986. His transition to the corporate world started at BNY Mellon, where he worked as Vice President of Software from June 1986 to June 1989. He then moved on to SoundView Technology Group, holding a Senior Vice President position from January 1989 to January 1991. Phillips continued to ascend the corporate ladder at Kidder Peabody, serving as a Senior Vice President between December 1991 and December 1994.
One of Phillips' significant roles was at Morgan Stanley, where he was a Managing Director from December 1994 to May 2003. His leadership skills then took him to Oracle Corporation, where he served as President and Member of the Board of Directors from May 2003 to August 2010. Following his tenure at Oracle, Phillips became the CEO and Chairman of Infor, a global enterprise software company, from December 2010 to September 2020.
In January 2020, Phillips co-founded Recognize, a $1.3 billion technology growth equity firm, where he currently serves as Managing Partner. His vast experience makes him a valuable board member of several significant organizations, including American Express, Bloomberg LP, Paramount+, and previously, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
Contributions and Board Memberships
Beyond his professional achievements, Phillips has also contributed significantly to various organizations. He serves as Chairman of the Apollo Theater and is the Co-chair and Co-founder of the Black Economic Alliance. He was also a member of President Obama's Economic Recovery Board and served on the board of the Council of Foreign Relations.
